Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, Jesmond Mugliett and John Dalli did not collect their voting documents
PN backbenchers Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, Jesmond Mugliett and EU commissioner John Dalli have not collected their voting documents, according to sources close to the PN Headquarters. The two parliamentarians and former minister did not collect their votes, even though they were eligible to vote.
This means that they will not be voting today. A vote which is expected to give an overwhelming support to Lawrence Gonzi.
Attempts to get the rebel backbencher Franco Debono to confirm or deny how he would vote today proved futile and when asked to comment today - a Saturday - he said that he could not because he was entering Court.
Franco Debono catalysed today's one candidate contest with his threat not to vote with government. 887 councillors are eligible to vote for Lawrence Gonzi. Last month Debono accused Gonzi of being an oligarch, arrogant and undemocratic.
Today's rubber-stamping one man is expected to give an overwhelming support for the Prime Minister and leader of the party. No one came forward to challenge Lawrence Gonzi for the post. Most of the councillors who are voting today were not elected to their posts but nominated. This was the case for the local committees in Sliema and St Julian's.
Party sources said that over 70% of all councillors were nominated, many of which were named and chosen by the PN central office, and many of these are well known for their support for Lawrence Gonzi.
