Really Briffy it is a rather poor understanding of basic Catholic teaching and he is after all a Maltese Prime Minister who swears by his Catholic conviction. Universality is a basic Catholic tenet and inclusion is a basic social right which Dr, Gonzi as chairman of the KNPD (1987-1994) used to loudly proclaim he believed in wholeheartedly. The other basic Catholic tenet Social Justice demands it. It seems it's a case of a la carte choice not just with Catholic tenets but inclusion too.

I'm shocked that people would think that this article is not worth printing. The man's past has nothing to do with the reason for his hunger strike; that the PM thought it important enough to meet the man originally, and then suddenly cancels BECAUSE of the man's past is extremely relevant, because it makes one wonder... did Gonzi originally want to meet him for humanitarian reasons or for a political publicity photo op? The fact that he cancelled the meeting simply because of the man's past allows us to imagine that in fact he cares nothing about whether the man lives or dies, but ONLY about how meeting him could help or hurt his own image.
