‘Gonzi should have resigned in wake of divorce referendum’ – Joe Cassar
Former Nationalist MP Joe Cassar says MPs and Prime Minister who voted against divorce in parliament against voters’ wishes should have resigned.
Former Nationalist MP and retired magistrate Joe Cassar said that Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and other MPs who voted against divorce in parliament did so against the clear mandate expressed by the people in the May referendum and consequently should have resigned.
Cassar said all MPs, including Gonzi, who voted against divorce, should have sent their letter of resignation to the Speaker of the House.
Cassar was adamant that the referendum should have been respected and MPs who did vote against divorce in parliament ultimately did not respect the electorate.
Referring to recent internal problems within the Nationalist Party, Cassar said that cracks were starting to show within the party.
The current PN media blitz about episodes of political violence in the 1980’s does not make any sense according to Cassar.
Cassar also warned the Nationalist Party that starting an electoral campaign too early might backfire as the party might “run out of breath”.
