Updated | Hungarian motorist in critical condition
A Hungarian national in danger of loss of life after plunging into the sea with his car in Msida this morning.
The police has identified Hungarian national Ferenc Varga, 29, as the man who was driving a vehicle in Triq ix-Xatt ta’ Ta’ Xbiex and ended in the sea between two small boats.
The accident happened just before 4am when the man was driving a towards Msida Church, lost control of the car, hit a Honda Jazz that was parked there, and swerved on the left with the car plunging into the water and ending upside down with the driver still inside.
The car had Hungarian registration plates.
The noise of the crash attracted some people who where in a nearby coffee shop who called for help. Police, members of the Civil Protection and an ambulance accompanied by a nurse from Mater Dei Hospital arrived on the scene in minutes.
A member of the Civil Protection dived into the cold water and managed to release the victim who was still with the seatbelt on.
When the man was brought to shore he was immediately taken to hospital where he was certified to be in critical condition and in danger of dying.
An inquiry is under way where procurator Mario Buttigieg was appointed as court expert. Inspector Jonathan Ransley and Police Sergeant Leroy Balzan Engerer from the District Police are investigating the accident.
