Identity Malta statement on identity cards and residence documents
Current Identity Cards will not be valid as from 1 January 2016.
Following the amendments to Maltese Legislation concerning the issue of Identity Cards, as from January 2013, Identity Cards are not being issued for foreigners residing in Malta.
Identity Malta said in a statement that all foreigners, who are authorized to reside in Malta are, however, required to be in possession of a residence document.
The said document also serves the purpose of an identification document. Residence documents bear the person’s identification number, which is unique to the person concerned. Such number ends with the letter “A”.
Residence documents are issued, on application, by the Department for Citizenship and Expatriate Affairs, Evans Building, Valletta. The offices of the said Department are open between 7.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m.
In so far as asylum seekers or failed asylum seekers are concerned residence documents are issued and renewed at the Police General Headquarters, Floriana.
As regards the identity cards of Maltese citizens, whose Identity card number ends with one of the following letters, M, G, L, H or P, such identity cards are being renewed by a new electronic format by means of a mass-roll out during established periods, at centres in the locality where the person has his/her address registered.
Those persons who failed to avail themselves of the opportunity to renew their identity card at their locality can apply for their new Identity Card at the ID Cards Management Office in Gattard House, National Road, Blata l-Bajda in Malta and in Gozo at 28A, St Francis Square in Rabat (Gozo).
Current Identity Cards will not be valid as from 1 January 2016.
