CHOGM’s head of security resigns 12 weeks before leaders’ convention
Former police commissioner Peter Paul Zammit has said his work was done and will return to private employment
The head of security for the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting has resigned just 12 weeks before Malta hosts the event.
Peter Paul Zammit, a former police commissioner was appointed to the post in June 2014, told the Malta Independent that what he had to do was “practically finished”, suggesting that his work was strictly limited to coordination and nothing else.
Zammit said he tendered his resignation three months ago, and is now finishing off his resignation period.
The legal procurator will return to private work.
Zammit was made police commissioner in April 2013 upon Labour’s election to power, replacing John Rizzo. The latter is currently heading the Civil Protection Department.
Zammit was brought out of retirement to head the police force but his tenure was marred by his apparent stalling on the investigation of former European Commissioner John Dalli, and then after he was found to have interfered to stop the arraignment of Josmar Agius for the assault of police officers in the Zabbar police station.
He was asked to resign a year after his appointment, and placed as ‘head of security for international events’ on the same salary as his commissioner’s wage.
