37,093 SMS excess emission reports in past three years

Transport Malta issued 729 notifications for cars to be submitted for emission testing between 2013 and 2015, 82 of which failed

Transport Malta received 37,093 SMS excess emission reports between 2013 and 2015, transport minister Joe Mizzi revealed.

He was responding to a parliamentary question by Opposition MP Ryan Callus.

Following these reports, Transport Malta issued 729 notifications for cars to be submitted for emission testing, 82 of which failed.

According to the SMS system, vehicles must be reported by three different people before being eligible for an inspection. Vehicle owners are consistently fined every time their vehicle fails an emissions test. If a driver ignores two subsequent inspection orders, the authorities will be obliged to impose license restrictions on the vehicle.
