A delegation from the Greek government is in Malta to learn about the legislation behind its pioneering gender identity law.

They met with civil liberties minister Helena Dalli, who said that Malta has become an exporter of laws in the LGBTIQ sectors.

She noted that Belgium recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Malta to draft a gender identity legislation on the Maltese model.

Malta’s gender identity law – that passed last year – removed the need for people to undergo sex reassignment surgery before changing their official documents to reflect their gender identity.

It also rendered gender reassignment surgery a valid reason for sick leave, expanded hate crimes to include hate crimes against gender-queer and intersex people, and allowed trans-people to change their legal identity while married.
