UHM confirmed to be leading representative of Freeport workers

UHM has been confirmed to be the leading union which will be representing the Freeport general workforce and will be negotiating on their behalf

Judge Laurence Mintoff told the court that Unjoni Haddiema Maghqudin (UHM) was to be officially acknowledged as the union representing the Freeport workers.

The Freeport had held an election in May where the UHM won with 275 votes, while the General Workers’ Union was awarded 254 votes.

Making reference to this vote, as well as the acknowledgement of the director of the employment and industrial relations department and of the Freeport management, the UHM said that it is now ready to take on its responsibilities of representing the Freeport workers.

“Having received this judgement from court, we are now ready to continue our work within the Freeport and to begin negotiations with the management in order to present a collective agreement for the workers as soon as possible.”

The case had to be taken to court because the General Workers’ Union rejected the results of the May election and requested a count of the workers who abstained to vote and of those who are not part of the union.
