The finishing touches are being applied on restoration works at the Grandmasters’ Palace in Valletta, which will host EU ministerial meetings during Malta’s upcoming stint at the head of the rotating presidency.

The focus of the works, which cost a total of €5 million, was on the former armoury that had for decades served as Parliament’s Chamber.

The old Chamber was gutted out and the furniture stored for possible future use. New furniture, as well as an electrical and audio visual system, air-conditioners, translation booths and a press conference area were installed in their stead.

Works also took place on the parliamentary archives, the palace’s main courtyard, offices and corridors.

The works were carried out by workers from the Grand Harbour Regeneration Committee, Heritage Malta and the Restoration Department.

Infrastructure minister Joe Mizzi and GHRC chairman Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi visited the Palace today, where the lights in the Palace’s courtyard were switched on for the first time.
