Maltese painter George Fenech passes away
George Fenech, the Maltese artist mostly known for his landscape paintings, passed away this morning at Mater Dei Hospital, aged 85.
Born in Mellieha on January 3, 1926, Fenech mostly enjoyed painting the Maltese landscape and nature. In an interview appearing in artinmalta.com, Fenech recounted how he used to sketch portraits of some of his colleagues when he was enrolled at the Weapons Training School in St Andrews.
At age 22, Fenech started studying art at the Government’s Art School under the watchful eye of Emvin Cremona and Vincent Apap. A few years later, Fenech won a scholarship and went on to study at the Reggia Accademia bi Belle in Rome and at the Scuola Arti Ornamentali San Giacomo.
Fenech’s first exhibition was with sculptor Ganni Bonnici at the De La Salle Palace in Valletta.
In 1973, Fenech married Doris Attard, from whom he had two sons: Conrad and Gilbert. He was also grandfather of two.
The artist’s funeral will be held next Tuesday, August 23 at Mellieha’s parish church at 3.30pm.
