Those seeking to experience Maltese culture and tradition would be well served by a trip to Casal Fornaro in Qormi – taking place on September 21 this year.
Tourists and residents alike will enter into what was once the town of the bakeries.
Casal Fornaro will cater for the thousands of visitors and offer genuine traditional Maltese food, folk songs, street drama and cultural exhibitions, all topped by several stages of live entertainment. The latter will also include traditional music known as ghana, as well as the sounds of Maltese bands, which are usually found in feasts.

It is the right activity that can offer the guests the chance to roam traditionally-decorated streets of the village renowned for its bread-making. After the huge successes in the past years, Lejl f’Casal Fornaro will once again offer the visitors a variety of Maltese food, baked the traditional way together, pudina and much more.
Various shelters used during World War II will also be opened for visitors specifically for this occasion… this time including a short drama depicting the outbreak of the plague that hit Malta in 1813, 200 years ago.
Also, on 20 September, the eve of Lejl f’Casal Fornaro, the Qormi bread festival is once again being orgnised. Various types of breads from different countries around the world will be exhibited and sold, while a two-hundred-metre baguette filled with Gozitan peppered cheeselets and other traditional fillings will be baked. A competition open to all residents in Malta and Gozo is also in the pipeline. This year, those taking part will show their culinary skills in preparing a Maltese trifle.
This national activity is co-ordinated by the Kummissjoni Zgħazagħ Bastjanizi, with the cooperation of the Qormi Local Council, together with the involvement of all other associations in the St Sebastian parish. The organisers are also supported by Maypole Bakery Ltd, whose involvement in the bread-making industry in Qormi dates back to over a century.
