Bobbi Kristina Brown, daughter of the late Whitney Houston, dies at 22
Family representatives have confirmed that Bobbi Kristina Brown, daughter of the late singer Whitney Houston, has died at 22, after being in an induced coma for over five months.
International media report that she passed away on Sunday surrounded by her family and was "finally at peace in the arms of God".
Brown was discovered unresponsive in a bathtub on 31st January and placed in a medically induced coma, but she never regained consciousness. Following a deterioration of her condition a month ago, Brown was moved to a hospice in the city of Duluth, Georgia.
Brown was the only daughter of Houston and R&B singer Bobby Brown. Houston was herself found dead in a hotel bath in Los Angeles in 2012, in an incident that was strikingly similar to her own daughter’s eventual demise.
The Guardian reports that Brown had dreamed of carrying on her mother's legacy as a singer and actress, and had a few small TV roles – but that her career had not yet taken off.
In January, police said Brown was found face down in a bathtub in the suburban Atlanta home she shared with Nick Gordon, the man she called her husband. A police report described the incident as a "drowning".
Gordon said at the time she did not appear to be breathing and lacked a pulse before emergency services arrived.
The Guardian reports that after Houston and Brown’s divorce in 2007, Houston kept custody of Bobbi Kristina and raised her alongside Gordon, an orphan three years older than her daughter. Houston brought Gordon into her family, and while she never formally adopted him or included him in the will, both teenagers called her “mom”.
Brown and Gordon went public with their romance, posting defiant messages online after the tabloids accused them of incest. The Houstons appeared to tolerate their relationship, appearing with them on television that year in Lifetime’s reality show The Houstons: On Our Own.
However, in one telling episode, the late singer’s relatives lectured the pair about drinking after they show up in an obviously altered state, and accused Gordon of failing to take care of the grieving girl.
Relations between Gordon and some other relatives continued to sour over the past year after Bobbi Kristina was hospitalised.
A protective order barred him from being within 200ft of Pat Houston, Bobbi Kristina’s aunt. A feud erupted over whether Gordon could visit Bobbi Kristina while she stayed in the hospital.
On 24th June, Bobbi Kristina’s court-appointed representative sued Gordon, accusing him of misrepresenting his relationship with Bobbi Kristina. The complaint accused him of being violent toward her and taking more than $11,000 from her account while she was in a medically induced coma after the Jan. 31 tragedy.
The lawsuit accused Gordon of assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, unjust enrichment and conversion.
