Good news for Predator fans
Following the critically-panned Alien vs Predator duology of films, the snaggle-fanged movie monster who gave Arnold Schwarzenegger a run for his pecks finally returns to the big screen with Predators, a promising production overseen by Mexican cult maestro Robert Rodriguez
Predators, released in local cinemas on 14 July, tells the story of a pack of cold-blooded killers (with the exception of a disgraced physician... who is however a wanted serial killer) stranded on a planet that acts as a game reserve for the hunting-driven alien species of Predators, whom we first encountered in the eponymous 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and directed by Die Hard's John Tiernan.
The Predators' last big screen outing was a 1990 sequel to the original starring Danny Glover. However, the franchise has had a very healthy shelf life since, appearing in a variety of media and cultivating a strong fanbase amongst geeks of every persuasion. The most popular of these was the Alien vs Predator comic book series, first released by Dark Horse Comics in 1990 and subsequently adapted into video games for a variety of platforms across the 90s and noughties. The cross-over, which was hinted at in the 1990 sequel, yielded two films: 2004's Alien vs. Predator and 2007's Alien vs Predator: Requiem. While financially successful, the films attracted largely negative reviews from critics and were a disappointment to hardcore fans of both properties.
It comes as no surprise, then, that the team behind Predators are distancing themselves from the 'AvP' duology, with Antal promising a closer affinity to the original Predator film. Casting decisions have also been refreshing, with the bony character actor Adrien Brody (The Pianist, The Villiage) leading the pack of shady (not to mention dangerous) characters. The cast also includes That 70s Show's Topher Grace (as the aforementioned physician) and The Matrix's Lawrence Fishburne.
