Free international music festival to grace Merchants Street
The Parliamentary Secretariat for Tourism, The Environment and Culture, the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, the Malta Tourism Authority and the French Embassy are proud to present Festa Muzika – La Fête de la Musique – in Valletta, on June 21.
The purpose of this event is to celebrate the longest day of the of the year through music, turning it as it may be into the longest most enjoyable night of music and dance.
There will be one main stage where bands will be performing. This will be located in upper Merchants Street (by the Auberge D’Italie) and there will be a variety of musical genres, with performances starting from 18:30.
The day chosen for the Maltese Fete De La Musique coincides with similar festivals all over the world. This annual event, which originated in France in 1981, has now been exported to all Francophone countries and beyond.
The purpose of this entertainment is to promote music in two ways: amateurs and professional musicians are encouraged to perform in the streets. The title Fete de la musique has actually a double entendre in its homophonic version. It means making music in a festival of music thus promoting its own goal.
In such a manifestation the concerts are free, making all genres of music accessible to the public. This year, the festival will have both local as well as foreign performing artistes. Thanks to the French Embassy, guest of honour Matthieu Chédid, who is a well known multi-instrumentalist with a great following in France, will also be performing.
