‘Space blues’ duo hit the Maltese stage | Joe Gideon and The Shark
Ahead of the release of their second album, London brother-sister duo Joe Gideon and The Shark will be playing at V-Gen, Paceville on Friday, May 4.
Joe Gideon pounds bass and guitar while narrating his autobiographical tales of misadventure, and little sister Viva (The Shark) drives the whole thing along with glorious drums, piano and 8-track, often all at the same time.
Meandering through soundscapes that take in beat-fuelled rifforama, voodoo-injected grooves and melodious beauty, their sound is both comfortably spacious and foot-stompingly intense, and highly original.
Formerly to be seen in the 'dread-fuelled' Bikini Atoll (produced by Steve Albini of Nirvana fame and released by Bella Union), Joe Gideon and the Shark released their debut album 'Harum Scarum' to critical acclaim in 2009.
Despite keeping a rather low profile the two-piece band have managed to capture the attention of their peers and have been invited to play with the likes of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Seasick Steve, Danielson, The Archie Bronson Outfit and most notable of all, a whole UK tour in support of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds after being asked by the man himself.
Known for their rapturous live performances, Joe Gideon and The Shark bring their space blues to a Maltese audience in a jam packed night which also includes The Shh,Skimmed, Clandestines and Rockna radio DJ Michael Bugeja.
The concert is organised by HairyAmp.
Tickets at €12 be on sale at Coach & Horses, Valley Road, Msida and V-Gen. They will be sold at €15 at the door. For more information log on to the event's Facebook page or call 99 846382/77 636235.
