Don’t get caught out: what to expect from Isle of MTV today
The Isle of MTV concert is literally just hours away and the Malta Tourism Authority would like to inform the general public of the final arrangements set in place for the event.
Now in its ninth edition, Isle of MTV will take place at its usual venue at the Granaries, Floriana. Kicking off at 19:00 tonight, the lineup for this year's event will include British chart-topping singers Jessie J and Rita Ora, along with dance collective Rudimental and Dutch DJ Afrojack. Local performers Kristina Casolani and Gianluca Bezzina will also hit the stage.
The concert, as always, is free of charge, with a 50,000-strong crowd expected at the Granaries.
The most important logistical aspect is traffic management and traffic redirection taking place on the day. Sarria Street will also be closed to buses and from 17:00 onwards, vehicular Traffic from Marina Street, Pieta' in the direction towards Floriana will be diverted through Independence Road, Pieta'.
Sa Maison Road and Hay Wharf will be open to one-way traffic from Floriana towards Pieta' today from 17:00 onwards.
Great Siege Road, Floriana will be closed for vehicular traffic from 17:00 onwards. In addition, the car park adjacent to Phoenicia will be cleared from 13:00.
To avoid traffic congestion, the MTA - together with Arriva - would like to encourage the public to make use of the special bus service being organised for the event, allowing for the pre-purchase of a day ticket covering also the special service. In addition to the traffic arrangements, the MTA is doing its best to ensure the safe enjoyment of the concert. There will be three clinics set up in the event of emergencies: one by St Publius Church, one by the Catholic Institute (petrol station side) and the other by the War Memorial.
The public is urged to keep well hydrated due to the high temperatures being experienced and to avoid excessive alcohol consumption.
The arrangements for special needs as previously announced, are that drop off is near the Independence Monument at the end of the Mall and access for transport will be allowed through Sarria St. To facilitate matters group arrangements are encouraged and arriving early is also recommended.
Numerous portable public conveniences will be in place along the Granaries and revellers are urged to a make use of them and avoid soiling the Granaries and the environs.
The MTA would also like to inform the public that police will be affecting random checks for glass bottles and if found they will be confiscated.
