The ‘sweet life’ comes to the island of sun, sea and swing
Ahead of a live performance from Italian electroswing outfit The Sweet Life Society, we chat to Alex Spiteri Gingell (aka DJ Zicotron), one of the main promoters of the rising subgenre, which combines the vintage sound of classic swing with modern beats.
The electro swing thing
The electro swing phenomenon has one leg in the past, and one in the future: a nostalgia for a bygone era which oozed class and style, and a fascination with the exciting possibilities provided by modern-day technology. It is therefore as retro as it is progressive, and vice-versa. It is also interesting to note that swing boomed especially during the period of the Great Depression and during the war years. One can say that we are living in comparable times of economic and political uncertainty on a global level. Swing music has this amazing quality of lifting people's moods in the face of all adversity, so maybe it is its main appeal in this particular era. I would say that it is this sheer positivity and sense of living for the moment that gives electro-swing its growing appeal. People in Malta have certainly tuned into this seductive frequency.
The electro swing crowd
I would say that electro swing appeals to a very wide age group, from early twenties to late forties. The style is multilayered, so different aspects of it appeal to different people. Some might be more drawn to the jazz elements, others to the vintage fashion aspect, while others to the electronic beats. All in all, if one had to find a common element between all electro swing fans, I would say that in general it attracts positive people looking for a good vibe.
Living 'the sweet life'
After having introduced the sound of electro swing in Malta, and after bringing the first international electro swing DJs to Malta, this represents the next step for us: The Sweet Life Society will be the first electro swing live act to perform in Malta. They were introduced to us through a common friend, Italian saxophonist Diego Grassedonio who has also performed at one of our events. Malta has acquired something of a cult status on the international electro-swing circuit, due to its exotic reputation as the island of sun, sea and swing.
The Sweet Life Society will be performing live at The Lido, Sliema on 26 July, 20:00.
