Legendary singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen dead at 82

Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen has died aged 82, his record label Sony confirmed on Facebook.

No details about Cohen’s cause of death were divulged.

“It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away,” a statement on his Facebook page read.

“We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries.”

A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. Sony said that his family was requesting privacy during their time of grief.

“Unmatched in his creativity, insight, and crippling candor, Leonard Cohen was a true visionary whose voice will be sorely missed,” his manager Robert Kory, was quoted as saying, confirming Cohen’s death in statement. “He leaves behind a legacy of work that will bring insight, inspiration, and healing for generations to come.”

Cohen is remembered as a poet, whose literary sensibility and elegant dissections of desire made him one of popular music’s most influential and admired figures for four decades.

In songs such as “Suzanne,” “Bird on the Wire” and “Hallelujah,” and in his poems and two novels, the Montreal-born artist provided a rarefied alternative to more accessible troubadours, employing meticulous language to plumb the vagaries of the human condition.
