Theatre | Pupu Fil-Bahar
Following a successful adaptation of Guze Stagno’s Inbid ta’ Kuljum, KAST will once again dip into contemporary Maltese literature for inspiration, transforming Alfred Sant’s short stories for the St James Cavalier stage.
After embarking on a series of discussions and workshops, the group have made an effort to match Sant’s wit and satirical bite in their dramatic presentation of a selection of short stories from the recently published anthology.
Directed by Carmel S. Aquilina, the cast includes Antonella Galea Loffreda, Joseph Galea and Charles Sammut, all of whom have channelled their efforts towards creating a piece that is both insightful and entertaining, while being shot through a dark sense of humour that illuminates the realities of Maltese society.
Some grotesque situations from the stories include the case of the woman who dies from a heart attack because the authorities (or is it?) will not put a sleeping policeman in her road; the wife who is more worried that her husband’s middle-class views are being influenced by the office cleaner rather than the fact that he is having an extramarital affair; the indifference of witnesses to a dead body in the sea which everyone assumes to be a floating mannequin, to mention just a few.
Celaine Buhagiar and the Dancel Studio dancers will be taking care of choreography, while Joe Brown will be at the helm of the music.
Pupu Fil-Bahar will take place at St James Cavalier over 1-3 and 8-10 April. All shows are at 20:00. Tickets at €12 (with €10 concessions) can be booked by calling 2122 3200 or logging on to https://ticketengine.sjcav.org/?eventname=Pupu+Fil+Bahar
