Facebook goes live on Melita TV

Facebook is now available via a television set rather than being accessible only on a computer.

Melita’s Facebook application goes live today, 1 June, offering the added comfort of keeping in touch with friends and up-to-date on gossip while watching live television.

This service is free of charge for all subscribers already in possession of the interactive Netbox, connected to Melita’s Internet service on the Entertainment Pack. The Facebook application can be accessed anytime via a TV screenand is already enabled on all Melita Netbox set-top boxes.

Melita subscribers will now be able to read the latest status updatesandcomments, view photos and comment through their television sets using the Melita control instead of a keyboard while the TV replaces the computer screen. This will allow customers to use facebook simultaneously while watching TV.

To access Facebook, customers need to tune in to Channel 998 or browsethe channel list from the remotecontrol. During the first log-in process, customers will be requested to enter a username and PIN. This can be done by visiting http://www.melita.com/FacebookOnTV. The PIN code will be requested every time Facebook log-in is requested through the Melita Netbox HD.

How does Facebook on TV connect to my account?

The connection to the Facebook account is established via the Melita Netbox and the Melita Internet connection. Navigationand interactionwith Facebook on TV takes place entirely through the Melita Netbox remote control. For example, if a subscriber wants to comment or type in something on Facebook through the TV set, the keypad on the remote replaces the computer keyboard, just like writing an SMS on a mobile phone.

Subscribers can also ‘Like’a TV programor comment about whatever they are watching, all in real time and while still watching TV.

Multiple accountson the same TV set

All the members of the household can use Facebook on TVand even friends who come over at home can enjoy their Facebook account on TV.

Switching from one profile to another is very easy, safeand secure. Whenever a profile is added to the Facebook on TV application, the Melita Netbox stores this profile in a list of Facebook profiles that can be accessedthrough that particular Netbox. A PIN request is mandatory for each profile every time access is requested and once the user exitsthe Facebook on TV application, nobody else can use the profile without re-entering the PIN code.

Why have Melita and GO not started transmitting all local channels free to air as they are obliged to do as from today? They should have already started at the beginning of the year but were given more time. Where are the authorities sleeping? MCA, BA, Gonzi, where are you?
