MIM, IoD-Malta launch MFSA corporate governance workshops

Workshops to be conducted with the support of the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA)entitled ‘Powers, Functions and Duties of Company Directors’ from 30th June – 28th July 2011 at the MFSA premises.

The workshops will serve as part of a consultative framework with the intention of compilingand presenting a report to the MFSAwith a viewto improve the quality of corporate governance in Malta and to update its initial guidelines on the subject.

The report will provide the MFSA with direct feedback from practitioners and directors in a structured and objective manner to act as a reference point from which it can make a considered judgment on director accountability in Malta.”

In orderto scope out the intended MFSA report,a series of fiveworkshops will be held to provide a fuller understanding of the issues involved in what has been described as a complex issue that concerns both stakeholders and shareholders as well as the officers of a company.

For the first session on June 30, IoD Head of Corporate Governance in the UK, Dr. Roger Barker will be a speaker. Dr. Barker spent the first part of his career in various senior roles in investment banking. He was an equity strategist with UBS in London, and later became Global Research Coordinator at UBS’s head office in Switzerland. Dr. Barker will be joined by Stephen D’Alessandro, Managing Director of Credal Business Consulting.

The following four workshops on July 7,13,21 and 28 will cover, handling conflicts of interest at Board and management levels with Dr. Andrew Borg-Cardona from BCGL Advocates, legal duties and responsibilities of directors with Dr. Robert Attard from Ernst & Young and Mr. Melvin Caruana who is Chairman of MIM Training & Development, risk management and capital adequacy with Ms. Jacqueline Fenech from Protiviti, UK, supported by Ms. Juanita Bencini from KPMG Malta, and, protecting and safeguarding stakeholder interests delivered by Dr. Louis de Gabriele from Camilleri Preziosi Advocates and Dr. Roberta Fenech Gauci from Fenci Consulting.
