Philip Saunders appointed Chief Commercial Officer at Air Malta

Philip Saunders has been appointed Chief Commercial Officer at Air Malta and takes up his position with immediate effect.

Saunders will be responsible for leading all commercial activity on a day-to-day basis and spearheading Air Malta’s restructuring in these areas.

The cabin service and ground handling departments will now form part of the commercial department, in line with Air Malta’s vision to deliver consistently excellent service, tailored to the needs of the Maltese market and meeting the airline’s commercial objectives.

The commercial department also includes sales and marketing, distribution and e-business, revenue management, network planning and commercial agreements.

Philip Saunders joins Air Malta with a strong track record built up over 20 years in the industry, with significant experience in turnaround situations.

Most recently, Saunders held the position of CEO at Caribbean Airlines, where he delivered a sustained transformation of the customer experience and achieved profitability one year ahead of plan.

Previous roles include commercial director at Star Alliance, delivering commercial advantage for the member carriers forming the world’s largest and most successful airline alliance. As executive vice-president commercial at SN Brussels Airlines, Philip worked closely with Peter Davies in establishing an effective commercial and operational platform following the collapse of Sabena, and in creating a profitable business against market expectations.

He also served in several senior positions at British Airways over 13 years, including management roles in Russia and Switzerland, as well as commercial director at Deutsche BA, a subsidiary airline based in Germany.

Peter Davies, CEO at Air Malta, said: “This appointment represents another important step in our plans to turnaround Air Malta. Philip brings in-depth knowledge of the international airline business and will be responsible for defining the airline’s commercial strategy by making Air Malta more customer centric. I am confident that he is the ideal candidate to lead change in our commercial division and to generate new revenue streams for the airline.”

On taking up his appointment, Saunders stated: “I am looking forward to facing the challenges ahead here at Air Malta and am certain that, together with my team, we can create a positive future for the airline, our staff and customers. Our new model will support the continued development of tourism and incentive travel to the islands, and recognise the specific needs of our Maltese customers.”

@vcas + @mikegold117 I am not a KM employee...and a floater but I observe....if u r referring to me, if the dirt you want to say its clean...it is finally up to you. I think...I hit the nail on its head. Sorry but the truth hurts.

@vcas1 agree completely. Employing foreigners or local is completely irrelevant as long as the decision is made on merit and know how. Unfortunately the airline industry is a very specialized field and it was quite clear the KM's in-breed managers were not up to the task or lacked international experience (or just too prone to political interferences). You've never mentioned what your field is but if you're are qualified there is a absolutely no reason why you should be prejudiced against. I've worked many years with foreign companies abroad and climbed up the ladder purely on my merits whereas in Malta I lacked the political support to make headway. The problem is not about employing foreigners but our ultra conservative approach on who should be getting the job. If you reread this blog you will see how we maltese tend to view this issue. In a way the Minister got it right when he mentioned the maltese cuc. He was actually refering to those who got positions thru their political affiliations while fellow, more qualified, maltese got passed over. Does this sound familiar ?

Imma kif tal-pl dejjem tinfexu fit-tajjir ara qatt ma tinbiddlu, intohom l-qwa garanzija li l-pn jirbah elezzjoni ohra. Kif tridu n-nies jafdaw il-pl??

First, these foreigners should start deeply and look through the 'contracts'. One example is the contract of the 'cleaners'. The management gave the cleaning contract to so called Dominic Gafa'. Without any offence, the Airmalta employed cleaners became extra. If we look both inside the aircraft and outside the aircraft, we notice that the aircraft, after being so called cleaned, infact it is 'filthy'. As I have sometimes with my own eyes, the cleaners manage to clean inside the aircraft with ONE BUCKET of water. Very well cleaned !!!!. About the outside of the aircraft, well, everybody can see for himself what is the difference between matt and gloss. Besides that, the cleaning agent should be the right one to cause no damage to the aircraft paint. And I dont think that this is being taken care. So, they gave the contract to ensure that it will be cheaper...and so cheaper, to use only one bucket, I am sorry...not even to clean a quarter of the aircraft interior. So guys, this is just one example of one contractor...shall we proceed, or....we let the management take all the necessary precautions for this.

What is the reason that top posts are going to Foreigners? Is it possible that Maltese are not capable to fill such a post? We boast so much that the Maltese are intelligent people !!!!
avatar
@not amused...u mean the amateurs appointed by the current administration which knew about the problems at AM for all these years? The proof of the pudding is in the eating and the Maltese people are still enslaved not by foreigners but by their pathetic colonial mentality. And please let us cut this crap about foreign expertise...for seven years I've taught in a British Univ which is ranked 150th worldwide (which I assure you is a BIG achievement) and I've had the pleasure to work with some of the best and smartest brains and was never treated as second class. It's you other Maltese who treat foreigners as if they were demi-gods....a pity really!
avatar
@gs Not with Arriva you don't. Wud you agree that they are treating foreigners as second class by applying higher rates than the locals. Expertise does not come cheap and having the airline run by amateurs has cost the tax payers millions. I just hope that the government will keep their meddling fingures out of the running of the airline for a change.
avatar
these people pay tax at 15% because they are foreigners, and payed from our taxes, and you and me pay tax at 35% because we are second class Maltese citizens.

Li kieku jiena l-Gvern li jmiss, kollha nfittixxkhom, ja qatta hallelin. Mhux jintnesa kollox. Jekk mhux il-Gvern, ahna l-poplu nfittxukhom. Verament wicckom imcappas. Anke tal-500 Ewro, thallsuhom b'lura. Mela ghax fil-Gvern, tidhku bil-poplu u taghmlu li tridu. Sewwa jghidu..Hadd wara Hadd, jasal ta kulhadd.

Recently two other appointments were made by the new CEO...together it sums up to nearly 1.5 million Euro in wages and other benefits per year. So four persons earn enough income to sustain at least 70 persons per year...

JGPEM skond l-aħbarijiet tal-lejla dan iċ-ċuċ barrani għandu €250,000 fis-sena. Mela hekk sewwa. Inkeċċu l-Maltin u ndaħħlu l-barranin imħallsin bil-mijiet ta' l-eluf fis-sena. Dan flimkien mas-CEO għandhom €750,000 fis-sena. Tibżax Tonio. Alla diġà qed iħallaskom talli qed tagħmlu u għad irid iħallaskom ħafna u ħafna aktar.

L-Air Malta is a national treasure, stolen by our politicians. It was a fat cow milked dry. When there was a lot of milk, it wasn't a problem. But now? We've put the cow in the hands of foreigners to nurse it back to health. A "ċuċ" approach? Another "friends of friends"? http://mazzun.wordpress.com/2011/06/28/l-air-malta-tezor-nazzjonali-li-serquh-il-politikanti-taghna/
