Enemalta acquires ISO 14001 certification

Enemalta Corporation awarded ISO 14001 for environmental management requirements for environmental management systems (EMS).

Enemalta received the ISO 14001 certification from Certiquality, a EU accredited certification body, for all its generation activities at Delimara Power Station (DPS) and Marsa Power Station (MPS), as well as for its distribution and development activities making it  one of the largest company on the island that has acquired this prestigious environmental certification.

The purpose of this standard is to help all types of organizations to protect the environment, to prevent pollution, and to improve their environmental performance on an ongoing basis. Moreover, such a standard can be integrated with other management requirements and help organizations achieve economic goals.

Enemalta Corporation has acknowledged various challenges that it faces in environmental protection, both on its own premises as well as a protection to the country’s environment. Being a major industry in Malta, Enemalta poses a threat to the ecology by affecting the air, land and sea conditions.

With EU accession, Marsa and Delimara Power Stations have to comply with the Integrated Preventive Pollution Control Directives (IPPC). The Corporation, in a planned and documented manner, will be implementing the requirements set out by the Directive.

The implementation of the ISO 14001 Standards involves a myriad of activities and ample co-ordination, as well as changes in perception in order to attain the desired benchmarks. A team of managers, engineers and other workers from various sections have in fact been working on the implementation of the EMS since 2008.

As a requisite to the standard, Enemalta now has a compiled Environmental Policy that states its “mission” and commitment towards the environment. This policy acknowledges the Corporation’s responsibility to generate and distribute electricity to its customers in a safe and efficient manner whilst safeguarding the environment. Engineer Karl Camilleri said that “we acknowledge that our operations inevitably impact the environment. We are committed to assess, prevent and reduce, wherever possible, these impacts and to continuously improve our performance.”

Enemalta put in practice a number of principles, namely meet, monitor and conform to all applicable environmental legislation, regulations and permits and in certain instances, also managed to exceed the requirements.

“We will continue our efforts to control and reduce pollution and establish clear, measurable environmental targets. Enemalta is also committing itself to continue to reduce the total energy consumed and reduce distribution losses, while seeking to reduce consumption of materials in all operations, reuse and promote recycling,” added Ing. Camilleri.

The Corporation is also promoting the adoption of good environmental management practices by its contractors and suppliers through a sustainable procurement policy alongside continued support to groups through its Corporate Social Responsibility Charter to help protect the environment and striving to develop a positive and constructive relationship with local communities.

Is this serious? How can enemalta get the ISO 14001 when we are still using the Marsa power station and will soon start operating the worse ever type of power generation using HFO. Something here does not give and who ever was involved in this matter must be celebrating his village festa.
