ME introduces Malta to Russian businessmen

Malta’s highly advantageous business environment was showcased in two separate events organised by Malta Enterprise in Moscow aimed at generating more awareness about the trade and investment opportunities that the country offers to Russian entrepreneurs.

The first of the events, which was organised with the support of the Russian Agency for Small and Medium Business Support (SIORA), was indeed targeted at the small and medium enterprises operating in Moscow and its whereabouts and was attended by around 45 companies.

A second event aimed at the larger industries held in collaboration with the Russian Federation Chamber of Commerce and Industry was likewise well attended, with around 20 companies taking part.

On both occasions, Malta was presented as a centre of excellence in a number of sectors which have been identified as key pillars of the economy, with Malta Enterprise executive chairman Alan Camilleri outlining the benefits that Russian entrepreneurs doing business with Malta can avail themselves of.

Particular focus was given to the possibility of entering into other neighbouring markets through Malta, which has become a regional hub within the entire Euro-Med area, as well as the fiscal and financial assistance available for investors setting up in the country.

Camilleri also referred to the recent appointment of a Regional Leader within Malta Enterprise focusing on Russia, to reflect the growing importance of the Russian economy in the world as one of the BRICS countries. The Regional Leader will faciltate the strengthening of commercial ties between the two countries, attracting further interest from Russia to Malta and providing support to local entrepreneurs wishing to expand their business in the Russian market.

While in Russia, Mr Camilleri also discussed possible cooperation agreements particularly with the Russian Federation Chamber of Commerce and Industry with a view towards enhancing bilaterial economic relations as well as organizing business events including business delegations to facilitate trade and investment.

Malta and Russia are both aiming to diversify their economies even further whilst focusing on sectors with an emphasis on higher added value and innovation. Sectors such as ICT, pharmaceuticals and medical technologies, as well as energy are being given priority in both countries and thus provide opportunities for increased cooperation.
