Melita selects Ericsson for mobile indoor coverage upgrade
New multi-million project follows assignment of lower-band frequencies by the Malta Communications Authority.
Melita has contracted mobile network giant Ericsson to upgrade various sites of its mobile network to improve indoor coverage.
The multi-million project follows the assignment of lower-band frequencies by the Malta Communications Authority to Melita mobile earlier in 2011. These frequencies are the same utilised by other local operators and offer better indoor mobile coverage.
"Melita is committed to offer a mobile experience equal or better to that offered by its competitors. Significant investments and continuous improvements have been made since launch in 2009. Test data regularly gathered and customer feedback confirm this, and in fact system performance is in line with international industry norms and in some areas is now better than other local operators," Melita chief technology officer Simon Montanaro, said.
The first phase of this network upgrade project will address 10 key areas, and will be announced in the coming weeks.
"The sites selected are being prioritised namely on the basis of customer feedback and utilisation. Once these areas are complete we can move on to assess requirements in other areas and localities," Montanaro said.
