Outbound tourism in January down 5.6% compared to 2010

Outbound tourism in January was estimated at 19,372, down by 5.6 per cent when compared to the previous year.

Outbound tourist trips to EU countries amounted to 16,626, while Non-EU trips stood at 2,746.

Both markets registered decreases of 3 and 17 per cent respectively. The UK and Italy remain the two most popular tourism destinations, and shared between them 66 per cent of the total outbound tourism market. There were drops in the number of trips to Germany and Italy, while trips to the UK and France exhibited upward movements.

During the month under review, male tourists significantly outnumbered females, accounting for 59 per cent of the total.

Trips were mostly carried out by tourists in the 25-44 age bracket (43 per cent of total), followed by tourists aged between 45 and 64. Out of 20,541 outbound visitors, the number of same-day visitors was estimated at 1,168, slightly less than the estimate for last year.
