APS, Hilton amongst best water saving practice enterprises

Water audit results to be announced during conference on water savings in the commercial sector.

Representatives from the Government and local authorities, the European Commission, the business and hotels sectors and other stakeholders will this Friday be discussing water conservation efforts during the National Water Conference organised by the Malta Business Bureau's EU LIFE Investing in Water Project, at the Radisson Blu Resort St Julians.

During the conference, engineer Marco Cremona, engaged by the MBB as part of the project team, will be revealing for the first time the results of a set of water audits carried out this year with business and hotels of all sizes representing various economic sectors.

These audits include a snapshot of the current situation in terms of water consumption in various industries, information on existing water saving solutions and the potential for adoption of further solutions.

The results have revealed that APS Bank and the Hilton Hotel are amongst the best water saving practice enterprises participating in the project so far. Officials from APS Bank and Hilton will be sharing their experience saving water in a commercial enterprise.

Malta Resource Authority (MRA) hydrologist Manuel Sapiano will on Friday explain to participants the situation in Malta concerning water scarcity and its impact on the provision of freshwater.  Peter Gammeltoft, Head of Water Protection Unit within the European Commission's Environment Directorate will discuss Malta's obligations in terms of EU policy and legislation. The conference will also see the participation of the Minister for Resources and Rural Affairs, George Pullicino, who will be closing the event.

"The cost of water and its local scarcity make efficient consumption an important consideration amongst businesses," stated Geoffrey Saliba, the MBB's EU LIFE Investing in Water Project Manager.

"The conference brings a wealth of information and will help to guide participants on how commercial enterprises can act to save water and hence reduce their operational costs."

The conference forms part of the drive by the Malta Business Bureau, the Malta Chamber and the MHRA to help businesses and hotels save water. This conference is sponsored by the Island Hotels Group and is open free of charge to all interested parties, subject to availability. It would be simplicity itself to describe the water problem as a consumption efficiency problem. It is that, but much more. It should be made amply clear that large industrial and commercial bottlers have got to pay for water like the rest of us, thus sharing the load much fairer than it has been for decades. Registering boreholes is not enough. They must pay like the rest. Swimming pool owners pay for their water via second class water bowser supply and swimming pool licenses. So both sets of users are not comparable.
