Ryanair carries 27% of record 2.6 million passengers through Malta airport

Ryanair welcomed Malta Airport's record 2.6 million summer passenger figures, with 27% carried by the low-fares giant alone.

Ryanair recently celebrated carrying its three millionth passenger since it began its Maltese operations in October 2006.

During 2012's summer schedule, Ryanair carried over 710,000 passengers, 27% of the traffic at Malta Airport. Since Ryanair first arrived in Malta in October 2006, it has grown to operate 27 routes, opening a base in May 2010 and carrying almost 900,000 passengers and high-spending visitors to/from Malta, sustaining almost 1,000 'on-site' jobs per one million passengers at Malta Airport.

Ryanair's Luis Fernandez-Mellado said: "In just seven years, Ryanair has carried three million passengers to and from Malta, with visitors saving over €70 million every year by switching to Ryanair's low fares over Air Malta's high fare flights. Ryanair will carry almost 900,000 passengers through Malta Airport this year, sustaining 900 jobs and underlining Ryanair's commitment to, and investment in, Malta."

According to the report, by using it's service, Ryanair says that visitors to Malta 70 million Euros. All well and good for the foreigners. But what about us Maltese citizens? I only travelled with Ryanair once and won't do it again. I not only did not save money, but a flight to London cost me more than an Airmalta flight would have, an di was not as comfortable as if I was traveling with Air Malta . I had to pay 70 Euros for checked luggage and my partner, who forgot to fill up the form that she was having checked luggage, had to paid 100 Euros in Malta, and another Euros 25 from London. The flight was so uncomfortable, with no reclining seats. The flight took us to Luton and we had to buy train tickets to London and back. The departure time from Luton was early morning, so despite booking for seven days at the hotel we could only stay six nights and late evening we had to make the trip to Luton.. Then after checking in we needed to have breakfast at the airport. It all adds up to a more expensive trip than taking an Air Malta flight.
