Unemployed in October up by 475 over 2011
Registered unemployed persons in October reached 7,013, up by 7.3 per cent over last year.
As at the end of October, the number of registered unemployed increased by 475, or 7.3 per cent, over the corresponding month last year. Unemployment among men increased by 258, or 5.0 per cent, while unemployment among women went up by 217, or 15.5 per cent.
In the twelve-month period to October, unemployment increased among most age groups.
As illustrated in Table 3, women showed a marked increase in registration, with those aged 25 to 29 going up by 15.2 per cent, those aged 30 to 44 rising by 11.1 per cent, and those aged 45 and over increasing by 25.2 per cent. Male registrants increased across all groups with the exception of those aged under 20.
Registered unemployed in Malta went up by 448, or 7.7 per cent, while their counterparts in Gozo rose by 27, or 3.9 per cent. On the mainland, registered unemployed women went up by 17.5 per cent, while their counterparts in Gozo increased by 5.0 per cent.
Over a one-year period, persons registering for work under Part 1 of the unemployment register went up by 461, or 7.9 per cent, while registrants under Part 2 went up by 14, or 2.1 per cent. Part 1 registrants aged 45 and over increased by 11.6 per cent, while Part 2 registrants within the same age group decreased by 6.8 per cent. On the other hand, trends in unemployment of the under 20 category differed between Part 1 and 2. In this regard, Part 1 registrants decreased by 5.3 per cent whereas Part 2 registrants increased by 16.0 per cent.
When compared to October 2011, the number of persons who had been out of work for more than one year increased by 233, or 10.1 per cent. On the other hand, persons who have been on the unemployment register for less than 21 weeks rose by 48, or 1.6 per cent.
Registered unemployment rate: June 2012
In June, the registered unemployment rate stood at 4.2 per cent of the labour supply (excluding part-timers): 5.0 per cent for men and 2.7 per cent for women.
The unemployment rate for persons registering under Part 1 stood at 4.7 per cent among persons aged 45 and over, and 4.5 per cent for persons under 25 years of age. The unemployment rate of persons who had been registering for work for at least one year under Part 1 of the unemployment register stood at 1.5 per cent: 1.9 per cent for men and 0.7 per cent for women.
