Air Malta chairman Louis Farrugia has announced he will step down in May, in an interview to The Times in which he says his decision has "nothing to do with the election".

Farrugia, who is the chairman of Simonds Farsons Cisk plc, was also made director at Allied Newspapers in December 2011.

Farrugia took on the role of chairman at Air Malta in May 2011.
