Unemployment creeps up by 532 over January 2011
Registered unemployed persons stood at 7,237 in January, up by 523 over the corresponding month last year.
In the twelve months to January, administrative records held at the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC) indicated an increase of 659 persons registering for work under Part 1 of the unemployment register, reaching 6,651. On the other hand, there was a decrease of 136 persons
registering under Part 2 of the unemployment register, which stood at 586 during January. Overall, the number of persons looking for work under Part 1 and Part 2 of the unemployment register went up by 523, or 7.8 per cent.
Part 1 of the Unemployment Register
Year-on-year, Part 1 registrants in Malta increased by 593 or 11.1 per cent, while their counterparts in Gozo went up by 66 or 10.1. The number of male registrants increased by 454, or 9.7 per cent, while female registrants went up by 205, or 15.5 per cent.
Registrants aged under 20 decreased by 46, or 10.5 per cent, in the twelve months to January. At the other end of the age distribution, registrants aged 45 and over increased by 315, or 12.6 per cent when compared to the previous year.
The number of persons who have been out of work for more than one year went up by 425, or 19.0 per cent, while persons who were registering for work for less than 21 weeks increased by 55, or 2.2 per cent.
In the twelve months to January, the number of persons with a disability registering as unemployed under Part 1 increased by 104 or 24.6 per cent.
Part 2 of the Unemployment Register
In the twelve months to January, registrants under Part 2 went down both in Malta and Gozo. Accordingly, Part 2 registrants in Malta decreased by 98, or 14.9 per cent, while their counterparts in Gozo declined by 38, or 59.4 per cent.
Registered unemployment rate: September 2012
In September 2012, the registered unemployment rate stood at 4.3 per cent of the labour supply (excluding part-timers): 5.0 per cent for men and 2.9 per cent for women. The unemployment rate for persons registering under Part 1 stood at 4.8 per cent among persons aged 45 and over, and 5.1 per cent for persons under 25.
The unemployment rate of persons who had been registering for work for at least one year under Part 1 of the unemployment register stood at 1.6 per cent: 2.0 per cent for men and 0.8 per cent for women.
