Vodafone backs creative recycling

Vodafone Malta togther with the Vodafone Foundation embarked on an initiative to support a local voluntary organisation, Recycle Malta in its first Crafts and DIY competition to promote creative recycling.

Last February, Recycle Malta launched an online Facebook competition on their page, where people were asked to submit photos of homemade recycled projects in order to win several prizes.

"Managing waste has always been a proverbial issue for our country," said Miriam Dalli, Corporate Affairs Senior Executive at Vodafone Malta. "Through this initiatve, Vodafone and the Vodafone Malta Foundation, together with Recycle Malta will help people appreciate the things they have. The initiative also helped us as an organisation to reinforce our commitment to take care of the environment, with our staff encouraging family and friends to join the group and recycle and reuse items which they do not use anymore."

Maroushka Zammit, Founder of Recycle Malta said, "The Group was created to connect people who are in need of giving their unwanted items together with people who may be able to reuse them. This in turn saves waste, money and the environment. Our first ever Recycled Crafts/DIY competition on Facebook was a good start with 19 participants sending in their entries. The aim was not only to encourage recycling but to encourage the creative reuse of items. I'm really pleased to see that the concept has been grasped and is being enjoyed by those who have joined us."

Prizes were given out for first, second and third place. Abigail Grech Cassar from Gozo won the first prize, a Vodafone Smart II Phone. Abigail presented a Christmas Tree made from small needles and sequins taken from an old jersey. Recycle Malta is a voluntary, pre-waste recycling initiative that began on Facebook in May 2012, with its website www.recyclemalta.org launched later in June 2012.
