Gainfully occupied up by 1.3% over November 2011
During November 2012, the gainfully occupied population increased by 1.3 per cent when compared to the corresponding month in 2011.
Administrative data provided by the Employment and Training Corporation indicate that over a twelve-month period, the gainfully occupied population increased by 2,014 persons to 152,806.
Over the same period, the number of registered unemployed increased by 506 persons reaching 7,098. This led to an increase of 2,520 persons in the labour supply, which stood at 159,904.
When compared to the corresponding month in 2011, the number of full-time employees within the Administrative and Support Service activities (NACE 77-82) went up by 814 persons. This was followed by Human Health and Social Work Activities (NACE 86-88), with an increase of 409
persons when compared to November 2011. In contrast, employment within Construction (NACE 41-43) declined by 289 persons.
In November 2012, private sector employment amounted to 73.2 per cent of the total gainfully occupied population. When compared to November 2011, full-time employment within the private sector rose by 2 per cent, or 2,203 persons. The highest increases were mainly registered in the Administrative and Support Service Activities (NACE 77-82) and in the Professional, scientific and technical activities (NACE 69-75); 836 and 306 persons respectively. Full-time employment in Manufacturing went down by 225 persons when compared to November 2011.
A year-on-year drop of 0.5 per cent was recorded in the public sector employment with the highest decrease being registered in Transportation and Storage activities (NACE 49-53); -179 persons.
Year-on-year, female employment went up by 3.8 per cent, or 1,938 persons. The largest proportions of women were employed within the Administrative and Support Service Activities (NACE 77-82) and within the Education sector (NACE 85) Compared to November 2011, the number of full-time employees rose by 1.4 per cent, or 1,898.
Human Health and Social Work Activities (NACE 86-88) along with Education (NACE 85) recorded most of the increases, with additions of 382 and 373 persons respectively. Over a one-year period, the number of self-employed increased by 0.7 per cent.
Part-time employment totalled 55,696 persons, an increase of 5.9 per cent or 3,095 when compared to the corresponding month in 2011. The Accommodation and Food Service activities (NACE 55-56) along with Wholesale and Retail; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles registered
an increase in part-time employment of 670 and 536 persons respectively.
The number of part-timers who also held a full-time job went up by 4.6 per cent when compared to 2011. The largest increase was recorded among females (10 per cent). Employees who have a part-time job as their primary occupation advanced by 6.8 per cent, with the highest increase being recorded among females (+6.3 per cent).
