Junior minister meets Malta Stock Exchange workers

Parliamentary Secretary for Competitiveness and Economic Growth Edward Zammit Lewis meets workers and management of the Malta Stock Exchange during an official visit.

Parliamentary secretary Edward Zammit Lewis this morning visited workers at the Malta Stock Exchange, taking the opportunity to meet with the Management and staff of the Exchange and learn about the operations and functions of this important institution.

In a brief address, Zammit Lewis spoke on the important role of the Exchange in the Maltese economy and expressed his satisfaction that, despite difficult circumstances and challenges the Exchange continued to increase its business and performance as evidenced by the excellent results announced for 2012.

"These positive results would not have been possible without the commitment and hard work of the Board of Directors, Management and staff," he said.

Zammit Lewis reiterated the government's commitment to support and promote, not only the Exchange but the whole financial services sector, in order that Malta may continue to develop as a well-regulated financial centre of international repute.

Hon Minister, do you really believe that the equities at the Malta Stock Exchange are run as a free, open market, and that the markets are fixing the prices ? It is very strange, but true, that when we changed over from Maltese lira to euro, in 2008, the numerical values remained the same, if an equity was valued at Lm4.00, it was simply converted to 4 euro. See the statistics !!
