RPI in June down by 0.39%, inflation at 1.39%

According to the latest statistics published by the NSO this morning, in June 2010, the Retail Price Index (RPI) went down by 0.39% when compared to the previous month. In fact, during June, the RPI went down to 101.21 from 101.61 in May 2010.

During June 2010, annual inflation rate stood at 1.39% while the twelve-month moving average rate of inflation stood at 0.74%

The NSO reported that this decline primarily reflected a decrease of 2.66% in the clothing and footwear index, mainly due to a seasonal drop in the price of garments.

During the same month, the recreation and culture index also saw a downward movement of 1.19%, mainly due to lower fees for television services.

The NSO also reported that during June 2010, cheaper prices for fruit and potatoes led the food index to go down by 0.80% when compared to the previous month.

Likewise, according to the NSO, the household equipment and house maintenance cost index during June dropped by 0.13%, mainly on account of lower-priced household appliances.

However, the other goods and services index rose by 0.21% during June 2010 when compared to the previous month, mainly on account of price increases in some jewellery items

The NSO also reported that higher airfares caused the transport and communication index to increase by 0.18% in June 2010 when compared to the previous month.

Moreover, the personal care and health index also went up by 0.14% during June 2010, mainly due to higher fees for medical services.
