Muscat opens 38th Interferry Conference

Prime Minister says maritime hub to address shortage of maritime experts in Europe

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat opened the 38th Interferry conference, being hosted in Malta, with a tribute to the island's maritime industry and an upcoming capital project for a maritime hub at the site of the former Malta Shipbuilding docks.

"Our maritime hub will address the current shortage of maritime expertise in Europe, in various roles. We recognise the importance of the maritime industry, in its widest sense possible. Not just by words, but by deeds," Muscat said.

Muscat said Malta's attractive destination for the industry resulted from its political stability, legal structure, strategic position and 100-year tradition in the industry. "The maritime industry is natural to us Maltese. After Britain, we are the most proficient in the English language, which is the lingua franca of the maritime industry."
