Tonio Fenech - Scicluna showing insensitivity towards the unemployed
Shadow minister for finance says government is trying to hide true economic situation
The Minister for Finance, Edward Scicluna, is showing insensitivity and a big lack of social consciousness towards the 7,619 persons who currently find themselves out of work, according to the shadow minister for finance, Tonio Fenech.
In a statement released by Fenech and the PN spokesperson for work, Stephen Spiteri, the former finance minister said that Scicluna, in his comments in which he quoted a survey estimate that has a margin of error, is ignoring the large number of men and women who are currently registered with the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC).
Fenech said that Scicluna is ignoring specific ETC statistics which gives the exact number of people who are registering for work.
He said that amongst the 7,619 unemployed persons, more than 3,000 of them were 45 years old or older, meaning that without government's help they will find it even more difficult to find work.
Fenech also critisised Scicluna for comparing employment statistics of August to that of May, saying that in order to be accurate, statistical comparisons should only be made between consecutive months or between the same months of consecutive years. He said that government is trying to hide the true economic situation in Malta.
Fenech said that the Nationalist Party would like to expressed its solidarity with all those who are currently seeking a job, as well as their families.
