Tonio Fenech - Scicluna showing insensitivity towards the unemployed

Shadow minister for finance says government is trying to hide true economic situation

The Minister for Finance, Edward Scicluna, is showing insensitivity and a big lack of social consciousness towards the 7,619 persons who currently find themselves out of work, according to the shadow minister for finance, Tonio Fenech.

In a statement released by Fenech and the PN spokesperson for work, Stephen Spiteri, the former finance minister said that Scicluna, in his comments in which he quoted a survey estimate that has a margin of error, is ignoring the large number of men and women who are currently registered with the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC).

Fenech said that Scicluna is ignoring specific ETC statistics which gives the exact number of people who are registering for work.

He said that amongst the 7,619 unemployed persons, more than 3,000 of them were 45 years old or older, meaning that without government's help they will find it even more difficult to find work.

Fenech also critisised Scicluna for comparing employment statistics of August to that of May, saying that in order to be accurate, statistical comparisons should only be made between consecutive months or between the same months of consecutive years. He said that government is trying to hide the true economic situation in Malta.

Fenech said that the Nationalist Party would like to expressed its solidarity with all those who are currently seeking a job, as well as their families.

One of the past, most unpopular ministers, for so many reasons, now comes pontificating and feeling sorry for the unemployed. Sit back Dr. Fenech, try to enjoy the ride and let Dr. Scicluna teach you how National finances should be managed for the COMMON good.

Progress you are perfectly correct. They did the same between 1996-1998 when a Labour Official was heard on a VHF radio tellign his friends to send their wife to work and when one of them answered that his wife had never worked he was told to tell her to register just the same so as to inflate the unemployment figures. Same PN, same tactics.

NSO is full of PN sympathizers. Now they are showing the true figures of last year's unemployed people. I know from fact of some friends last year and just before the election they were written off from the register, for unknown reason, and it seems that now they are including them back. Same old PN, same old story to undermine the Government by getting these PN blue eyed boys and girls at the Statistic offices to do the damage, but this time the people know what is going on. More people are employed and the NSO says otherwise, it shows that we have a huge majority of civil employees still under the PN influence. That is malicious indeed
