Reports of Water Services Corporation chairman’s resignation
WSC and ARMS chairman Tony Meilaq refuses to confirm or deny reports that he has resigned his chairmanship
The chairman of the Water Services Corporation, Tony Meilaq, was said to have tendered his resignation, a government source told MaltaToday.
MaltaToday was reliably informed that a meeting with Meilaq was held at the Office of the Prime Minister on Tuesday afternoon, with energy minister Konrad Mizzi. When faced with this information, Meilaq refused to confirm or deny the resignation.
Meilaq was expressly asked whether he had tendered his resignation as chairman of the Water Services Corporation, and whether he could deny this information.
"I do not wish to comment... if anything has to be made official as to what you are saying, you will hear about it," Meilaq said.
MaltaToday is not informed whether Meilaq also resigned his chairmanship at ARMS (Automated Revenue Management Services), the WSC's and Enemalta's billing company.
Nationalist MP George Pullicino raised questions over the infrequent board meetings at the Water Services Corporation in his interventions on the budget vote for the ministry for energy and water conservation.
Meilaq's resignation, if confirmed, would be the second one for ARMS, which was recently chaired by Anthony Valvo, mayor of Xghajra. ARMS also recently appointed a new chief executive, James Davies, to take over acting CEO Henry Attard after the suspension of Wilfred Borg.
The Water Services Corporation's chief executive is Frederick Azzopardi, who is also a Labour local councilor for Mdina.
Tony Meilaq was appointed chairman of the WSC in April, and chairman of ARMS in June 2013. He had served as chairman of Telemalta, the forerunner of GO, during the Sant administration between 1996 and 1998.
