Local letter price unchanged in new mail price revisions

The Malta communications Authority has partly accepted new increases in certain categories of mail handled by Maltapost.

The company said that over the last years, changes in the framework established by the Universal Postal Union establishing inter-operator fees, had negatively impacted Maltapost.

"A number of services have recorded systematic losses. These trends are such that it is unsustainable to keep providing the current level of service at the present rates," the company said.

MaltaPost submitted a request to the Malta Communications Authority for a revision of postage rates. In its decision published on 24 December 2013, the MCA partly approved such a revision.

Local mail stays unchanged at 26c but increases to 42c from 32c for letters weighing 50-100g.

Local registered mail remains unchanged at 90c but increases to €1.20 with advice of delivery. Local bulk letter mail remains unchanged at 24c, but increases to 36c from 30c for 50-100g letters; and unchanged at 20c per additional 50g for letters weighing between 100g-2kg.

Increases will mainly affect letter mail to Europe, climbing from 37c to 59c for 20g letters; and for international registered mail, from €2.25 to €3 and to €2 from €1.75 with advice of delivery.
