STEP Malta conference a success

The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners held their first international conference on the 10-11 March 2011.

The conference was held at the Hilton Malta and attracted 162 attendees from Malta and overseas.  The conference would not have been a success without the local support of so many professionals and sponsors.

Over the two days the attendees were provided with the views and presentations of twenty experienced Maltese and international speakers.  From Malta’s financial platform they listened to the benefits of Malta Companies, the unique Trust Law, Malta Foundations, Malta Residency, Tax Treaties and the impact of Legitim on Succession Planning.

From an EU standpoint they heard about certain aspects of continuing business to Malta through a case study.  They received an update on the international trust industry, a review of significant international trust cases and settlor control issues.

EU cross border succession and later property rights in marriage were also considered.  Continuing the Global nature of this conference there were presentations on the UK as a place of residence for the wealthy, reporting obligations when doing business with US Citizens and the opportunities that the new wealth in Asia is providing.

It is hoped that the international publicity from this conference will assist Malta’s Financial Services Industry.  This seems to have been a very successful event and the pre and post news about this event would reach many thousands of professionals in the financial services industry internationally.
