Busuttil invites PM to consult with Opposition on employment strategy
Joseph Muscat not consulting with Opposition on a national employment strategy, says Busuttil.
Leader of the Opposition Simon Busuttil has critisised Prime Minister Joseph Muscat for not consulting with the Opposition on a national strategy plan for creating jobs.
"We (the PN) are worried about the lack of urgency and attention with which the government seems to be addressing such an important sector as that of employment," he said.
Speaking at a meeting with representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and the Malta Enterprise yesterday, Busuttil said that the Opposition, various social partners, the Chamber and the Malta Enterprise were all willing to help.
"Our aim is the same as government's and that is to create jobs. In spite of the opportunity to consult with us, the government is choosing not to," he said.
Citing a statistic which showed that in 2013 Malta had the biggest drop in industrial production amongst the EU countries, Busuttil said that what was even more worrying was the increase of unemployment.
He said that the government had to address this issue, as well as outline a clear economic plan for this country.
"Unfortunately, to this day, government still has no plan to create more job opportunities," he said.
Stressing that the Opposition will continue to urge government to focus all of its energy on creating work opportunities, he said that the PN had always placed commerce as a field of importance in its politics.
