Full-time employment up by 2.8% over September 2012

In September 2013, full-time employment increased by 2.8 per cent when compared to the corresponding month in 2012.

Administrative data provided by the Employment and Training Corporation show that over a period of one year, the labour supply increased by 3.2 per cent, reaching 165,303. This was mainly attributed to increases in the full-time gainfully occupied population of 4,342 persons and in registered unemployment of 750.

In the month under review, the Administrative and Support Services Activities and the Education sector  increased by 12.4 per cent and 6.0 per cent respectively when compared to the corresponding month in 2012.

Increases in full-time employment within the private sector were recorded in Administrative and Support Services Activities (+13.1 per cent) and in Human Health and Social Work Activities (10.3 per cent). This sector also registered drops in employment in Construction activities (-2.2 per cent) when compared to 2012 levels.

Within the public sector, a shift in employment was registered from Construction to Public Administration and Defence; Compulsory Social Security.

The number of full-time self-employed rose by 215 when compared to September 2012. During the same period, the number of employees increased by 4,127. Male and female full-time employment went up by 1.4 per cent and 5.6 per cent respectively over 2012.

Registered part-time employment for the month under review went up by 5.1 per cent when compared to 2012 levels. The economic activities which experienced major increases were Wholesale and Retail; Repair of Motor Vehicles (+503 persons) and Public Administration and Defence; Compulsory Social Security (+473 persons). On the other hand, part-time employment in Information and Communication went down by 145 persons.

In September 2013, the number of part-timers who also held a full-time job amounted to 24,311 persons; an increase of 4.2 per cent when compared to the corresponding month in 2012. Compared to September 2012, the number of employed persons whose part-time job was their primary occupation totalled 33,774 persons; an increase of 5.8 per cent or 1,840 persons when compared to 2012 levels.
