Enemalta urged customers who still have old electricity meters in their properties to contact the company to have them replaced with new smart meters.

The utilities’ project to introduce an automated meter management system in Malta and Gozo is nearing its final stages as the majority of smart meters required for this technology have now been installed.

The company said that over 87% of the electricity meters connected to the grid have been replaced with new smart meters and the remaining ones are expected to be replaced in the coming months.

Customers who still have old electricity meters installed at their residential or commercial properties are requested to contact Enemalta on its Customer Care freephone 8007 2224 (lines open 24 hours, seven days a week) or by email on [email protected], to request an appointment to have them replaced.

Enemalta said that in most cases, these customers have already received notifications to have their meters replaced, however they have not yet provided access to their properties to have the new ones installed.

While noting that old meters at vacant properties also need to be replaced, the company said that customers who have not yet provided access to Enemlata are now being requested to call as soon as possible.

Through the introduction of smart meters, customers’ actual electricity consumption readings will be automatically transmitted to the billing system without the need for meters to be read on site. This, Enemalta said, will lead to a more efficient billing process and will make it easier for customers to assess and control their consumption patterns.

Enemalta CEO and director Fredrick Azzopardi thanked the customers who have already had their meters replaced for their collaboration in the implementation of this project.

“We are committed to complete the remaining installations as soon as possible, and to continue upgrading our electricity generation and distribution infrastructures to provide better quality services and to meet our customers’ expectations.”
