Chamber of Commerce criticises raise in cargo charges
Chamber of Commerce says that increasing cargo handling charges will "make Malta less competitive"
The Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry said that Malta must stop “placing further self-induced obstacles on its competitiveness”, in a reaction to news that Valletta Gateway Terminal will increase cargo handling charges as from 1 September, 2014.
“In light of Malta’s physical isolation and minute domestic economy whereby international business activity is key to its economic survival, cost effective and competitive communication lines with other countries, especially at port level, are of fundamental importance,” the Chamber said.
“Increases in charges will affect importers at point of importation, while the manufacturing industry will incur these costs both at point of entry, as well as at point of exportation.”
Transport Malta had previously criticised the Valletta Gateway Terminal’s planned increase in cargo handling charges. The Malta Chamber is urging them to continue vigorously objecting it.
