CareMalta offers career training for employees
The company believes that it is only by taking this holistic approach vis-à-vis its employees that one could secure a serene work-force totally focused on giving a quality service to its clients.
Since it was set up over 20 years ago, CareMalta has always believed that its success hinges mainly on the quality of services provided by its employees.
For this reason, the company always ensures that the people it employs are carefully selected and also developed into skilful, motivated caring professionals.
Unfortunately, the caring industry has been facing an acute shortage of staff for the past years. This may be attributed to a number of factors, mainly other opportunities other youngsters are able to lay their hands on.
The demands of certainly roles, particularly that of a care worker, is deemed unattractive to some but, fortunately, exciting to others. It is after all a vocation to give so much love, so much care, to show so much compassion to vulnerable people like the older persons.
Rather than staring at the problem of lack of staff CareMalta decided to think outside the box. Seeing that the country’s administration is always emphasising on the need for more women to join the workforce, it found a way of attracting this category of job applicants.
For this reason four years ago it held discussions with world renowned educational institution - City & Guilds - to start training programmes leading to qualifications in healthcare. Hence the diploma and the specialist diploma started being offered. To date more than 300 individuals have obtained this Level 3 internationally recognised diploma.
CareMalta also offered another City & Guilds programme, this time focusing on dementia awareness and care. By offering this programme to its employee and other external candidates the company managed to build a team of carers who are also qualified in dealing with residents suffering from this condition. More courses are being planned.
What is of great satisfaction to CareMalta is the amount of candidates, mostly women, for whom these qualifications are the first they have ever achieved in their life. A number of these women had stopped working years ago in order to focus on raising their children and taking care of their family. The opportunity to work and study after all these years gives them the chance to open a new chapter in their career. CareMalta also offers the possibility of a career progression to those joining it as care workers.
CareMalta believes that in order for its employees to give their utmost at the place of work they should be given the necessary assistance to have the necessary balance between their personal life and their work life. For this reason a few years ago the company introduced a work-life balance policy through which employees can benefit from a variety of options such as extra leave to attend to family needs, flexi-time, job sharing, subsidized child-care services and so on.
Recently the company, and the rest of the Vassallo Group introduced an employee assistance programme for its employees and their immediate family. By joining forces with the Richmond Foundation the company is now in a position to offer professional services to its employees and their immediate family in personal circumstances that may disrupt one’s life.
The company believes that it is only by taking this holistic approach vis-à-vis its employees that one could secure a serene work-force totally focused on giving a quality service to its clients.
CareMalta has been at the fore-front of long-term care since its inception in 1993 and intends to remain so despite the growing competition. By opening its eight home in 2015 the company would see its work-force approaching the 1000 mark.
This threshold has already been surpassed by a few hundreds in the number of elderly it is currently caring for. Beyond the numbers CareMalta will always look out for individual needs, both of the residents and its employees, and to cater for them. CareMalta really cares.
