Lufthansa Technik wins airplane modification contract costing millions

Lufthansa Technik Malta has been awarded a contract costing millions for the modification of 60 Boeing 737 Lufthansa airplanes.

Works on the aircrafts started last August, and one plane already appears to be complete. The entire project should be complete by May 2014, In-Nazzjon reports.

The project was announced by CEO of Lufthansa Technik Malta Louis Giordmaina, during a visit from Finance minister Tonio Fenech at the old Lufthansa hangar in Luqa.

Fenech was accompanied by Malta Enterprise chairman Alan Camilleri and German ambassador Bernd Braun.

Giordmaina explained how Malta won the contract amid intense international competition, including participants from China. He added that the works are being done at the old hangar because the two new hangars in Hal Farrug are fully occupied with work.

The modification of each aircraft involves 10,000 hours of work from 60 workers for 30 days, and includes the repair or new installment of side panels, new seats, and various other changes.

Giordmaina said 90 new workers were employed with Lufthansa Technik Malta this year, rounding the total number of workers to 560. The company hopes to increase its workforce if it is to continue bidding for airplane contracts.
