Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has officially inaugurated the first block at SmartCity Malta, in Ricasoli.

Meridium, a Virginia-headquartered asset performance management (APM) software provider, is to become the first SmartCity tenant and will base a four-member team at Smart City Malta next month.

Meridium is a software engineering services company offering a full enterprise solution: its client portfolio includes names such as Chevron, LyondellBasell, Marat hon Oil and Anglo Platinum.

The 12,000 square metres of office space together with a sophisticated underground infrastructural system which is expected to serve most of the US$300m IT township, was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

"We are today witnessing the beginning of a renaissance for this area, for Malta and for our economy. SCM01 is yet another symbol of Malta's investment attractiveness, strong economic fundamentals and potential. Whereas in the past we spoke about the challenges of insularity, today we speak about the opportunities of connectivity. SmartCity Malta is such an opportunity," the Prime Minister said.

“We are witnessing the realisation of a dream. A dream which sees Malta become a regional and global player in ICT ." he said.

Ahmad Bin Byat, CEO of Dubai Holdings, the owners of SmartCity Malta, said he had vivid memories of the launch of Dubai Internet City 10 years ago.

"I see similar energy, commitment and enthusiasm to make SmartCity Malta, our first overseas project. "

"We seek to develop SmartCity Malta into a major new centre of excellence for knowledge based companies. The entire development is designed to enable knowledge-based companies to maximise their growth potential. While companies will benefit from high-quality infrastructure and support systems, knowledge workers will have an ideal environment in which to work, network and exchange ideas and information. I believe SmartCity Malta will make a significant contribution to Malta’s economy, by opening up new development avenues, specifically in the IT and IT-enabled services sectors,” Bin Byat said.

Also present was Infrastructure and IT minister Austin Gatt.

Will the jobs be for Maltese citizens of are they going to import cheap third-world countries labour? Is the government going to allow them to do this or is it going to insist on Maltese workers being employed? Is the government going to continue issuing permits for foreigners from all over the world to come to work in Malta while Maltese citizens are on the dole?

Who is this 4 member team - I wonder! Is its a blue chip 4 member team? Is it a multinational run by one person assigned to each continent ? The mind salivates at this enticing yet vague titbit of information Gonzi has let slip our way.

Did Austin Gatt walk out of the ceremony at any point? Btw - how many people turned up for the invite - i could only see Austin, Gonzi and some other people obviously from Smart City itself. Claudio Grech did not turn up either - guess having been the CEO of the project, he knows what a waste of time it is - and anyways the buggers are no longer contributing another salary to his income. Ok - so the 5 star hotel has one room ready. We'll finish building the hotel from all the income we'll make off the occupants of that room. Hurrah!

What's this? Is Malta Today going the Gonzi way and starting to deal in perceptions? The image attached to this article's is just that; a perception. One expects MT to show us a photo of the real thing. Could MT do that please?
