Hilton Malta is set to undergo an extensive refurbishment project worth €15 million, Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis announced today.

Hilton Malta currently employs around 450 full-time employees.

“Significantly, this development also comes hot on the heels of another investment of €6 million announced by the Tumas Group for the Hilton Malta last April, which focused on the refurbishment of 300 bedrooms. The Hotel also has plans to enhance the amenities of its property, with a project worth €4 million and which is aimed for completion by April 2016,” Zammit Lewis said.

He said that it was with a huge sense of optimism that the government looked towards the future of Malta’s tourism industry, encouraged by the trust which the private investor was continuously showing in the economy by announcing such projects.

The minister said that credit rating agencies and international foras positively affirm that the Maltese economy was on the right track. In its latest report, Standard & Poor’s Credit revised their Malta outlook to positive from stable.

Encouraged by the latest tourism records, Zammit Lewis said the government was keeping its end part of the commitment. “In accordance with our electoral pledges, we have ensured that Malta’s economic sectors, including tourism, have started to benefit from more cost-effective energy tariffs. The reductions in tariffs alone introduced by this Government to the tune of 25 per cent in electricity bills and a five per cent reduction in water bills - are expected to amount to around €50 million per year in savings that can be directed to fund new projects and investments.”

The minister the height limitations policy was revised to support hotels.

“The Government’s role and contribution towards accomplishing set targets for the industry is essential. Government has the responsibility to ensure that the country’s overall image and the major factors associated with tourism reflect value, particularly in relation to public infrastructure, public services, safety and security, and consumer protection. In response to this challenge, the tourism zones in the southern, central and northern parts of Malta have been established.”
