Toyota recalling 1.53 million cars globally as recall spate endures
Car manufacturing giant Toyota announced a stunning recall of 1.53 million Lexus, Avalon and other models, mostly in the U.S. and Japan - the latest in a string of quality-related recalls for the world leader.
The company said it will be calling back for repairs to brake fluid and fuel pumps about 740,000 cars in the U.S. and 599,000 in Japan. The remaining 191,000 cars will be recalled from Europe and other markets around the world.
The majority of vehicles will need repairs to problems with the brake master cylinder which could lead to weaker braking power, spokesman Paul Nolasco said in Tokyo. Some models in Japan and elsewhere — but not in North America — have an reported electrical problem with the fuel pump which could cause the engine stalling, he said. No accidents have been reported from the two defects, he said however.
Over the past year, Toyota has recalled more than 10 million cars and trucks worldwide for a myriad of problems - ranging from faulty gas pedals, floor mats that can trap accelerators, and even braking problems in its Prius hybrid.
Last August Toyota recalled 1.33 million Corolla sedans and Matrix hatchbacks in the U.S. and Canada due to engine stalling issues.
Nolasco said the recall decision was made under Toyota's new quality control regime instituted over the last several months - in response to criticism that the company was slow in dealing with similar safety problems earlier this year.
